Problem Statement

In 2015, OptumRx was ready to create its first mobile app for its Optum Rx Medication Mail Service. This application enabled the 1.2 million OptumRx Mail Service Pharmacy customers to have a one-stop shopping experience that lets customers easily purchase and manage prescriptions for themselves and their family members while on the go.

Challenges

Before the development of this application, managing prescriptions for some was a daunting task. The OptumRx Mobile Application places prescription management at your fingertips and converts your smart-connected device into a mobile pharmacy.

I conducted competitive analysis sessions, researched market strategies, and effectuated collaborative design work sessions. I interviewed product stakeholders, OptumRx pharmacists, and call center reps to validate designs through rounds of usability testing before going to development.

AWARDS

Within the first month of the application’s launch, OptumRx mail-order sales doubled in volume to exceed 100 million dollars in product revenue. Our design was also the winner of 2015 global “A’Design Award” Competition.

User flow- Login/Dashboard

After logging in, the user can see a dashboard that shows their medications and offers access to order status, pharmacy claims, finding alternatives, etc.  When the user clicks on their medicine cabinet, they get an overview of their prescriptions that are ready for a refill and renewal. In addition, they can see the entire family’s prescriptions.

In response to the extensive usability testing conducted, the design was changed to accommodate all refill, renew, and enroll buttons at the top for users' convenience.

User flow- Checkout

When using the OptumRx app to check out, users can see which medications belong to which family members. To make things more convenient, the design also allowed users to select 'cards' for their address, shipping, and billing methods.
